Conservation is not an end goal, it’s a stepping stone on the path to humans living in harmony with the other beings of the Earth. Through story let’s explore what this means; the ways conservation relies on concepts of management that come out of Western enlightenment thinking, how other beings (especially bears) challenge what it means to ‘protect’ the ’natural’, and how the decline of another Western institution (the church) might inadvertently contribute to our fantasies of mastery of the natural world. What do we do when all the conserving is done?
