As the Scottish Government prepares a new strategy which seeks to transform the economy, we meet to explore the implications for policy of setting high-level purposes like ending our contribution to climate change, reducing inequalities and delivering wellbeing for all. What has to change to achieve them? How can we bridge the current mismatch between language and actions?
If the drivers of global heating, biodiversity loss and growing inequalities lie in the economy, so also do the solutions. Scotland has an opportunity now to identify these solutions and how they can be implemented.
The SNP and Scottish Greens have said that “meeting our climate targets and delivering a green economic recovery from Covid, protecting and restoring our environment, and re-orienting our economy towards wellbeing and fair work should be the basis of the National Strategy for Economic Transformation”.
